Both of us really believe strongly in ‘local’ shopping: local veggies, local meat, and local cheese - supporting the local community. So it might seem like a rather large dichotomy that we should be importing products from as far away as Australia and America when considering our business ethics!
Most of our imports are transported via sea freight from the east coast of America to Harwich in Suffolk. Ironically, although the distance is considerable the actual carbon usage is minimal with proportionately low road miles. Bod, our skincare range from Australia is too delicate to transport via sea. A long period subjected to diverse temperature could cause damage to such pure products so it has to go via airfreight. Again road miles are minimal but as we all know there’s not a lot worse than flying when it comes to carbon emissions! When our sales increase we will use refrigerated containers to transport bod via the ocean.
We import brands like Seventh Generation, Recycline and Bod because we believe they are the best products within their market sector worldwide and we think that companies with their attention to ethical values and detail should be supported and available to everyone. In order to lower the impact of these imports we decided to offset the carbon we use via the CarbonNeutral Company. They calculated the size of our footprint and recommend some suitable projects for us to use as an offset. We decided to plant trees in Snowdonia but hope to expand this to all sorts of projects in the future including projects at a local level to us in Suffolk.
